Minister of Mines of the DR: “It´s imminent that this year investment decisions must be taken to reinforce the internal security in the Larimar mine”.

Asked about the concerns raised by Amelia Deschamps’ documentary on the larimar mine by revealing the risky conditions in which work is being carried out there, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Energy and Mines said “we sustain, that it´s imminent that this year investment decisions must be taken to reinforce the infrastructure and the internal security (in the Larimar mine). Because a life, a single life, is worth more than all the Larimar that can be extracted from there” express, Antonio Almonte.

The short documentary film “In Search of the Blue Heart” tells the story of Daniel, a father of 11 children, who dives every day into the dangerous and rustic tunnels of an artisanal mine in search of larimar, a semi-precious “blue-sea” colored stone unique to the Dominican Republic and declared the National Stone by Congress.

After 32 years working as a piquero, Daniel is looking for his last extraction to retire. Through his story, we travel through the artisanal tunnels and discover the great risks faced by the larimar miners every day.
