Biologist warns that Dominican Republic is losing its coral coverage
FUNDEMAR has been working on assisted reproduction of corals, monitoring their spawning, capturing the gametes and facilitating fertilization.
ACENTO – August 7, 2024
Marine biologist Rita Sellares warned of the death of coral in the Caribbean area, and in the case of the Dominican Republic, in just four years, it has lost around 60 percent of its coral coverage.
Sellares, director of the Dominican Foundation for Marine Studies (FUNDEMAR in Spanish), explained that coral reefs are vital for the preservation of 25% of the world’s marine species, even affecting the food chain.
Interviewed in the program “Se Vale Preguntar” (It’s Worth Asking), hosted by Amelia Deschamps, the specialist said: “In only 2 years we have seen a high mortality rate in our reefs. We had observed bleaching and some decline, but since 2020 to date we have lost almost 60% of coral cover, not only in the Dominican Republic but also in the Caribbean”.
